CW January 2003Issue Number 1 January 2003 ISSN 10593802 New Treatment for Invasive Refractory AspergillosisMicafungin, a glucan synthesis-inhibitor of the echinocandin structural class, may have potent therapeutic effects for fighting refractory invasive aspergillosis in bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients. Glucan is an essential component of the fungal cell wall. Allogeneic BMT patients with aspergillosis have a poor prognosis, with published success rates for conventional therapy in the 13%-19% range. Standard treatment has been with amphotericin B.
