CW January 2003Issue Number 1 January 2003 ISSN 10593802 Helicobacter pylori and Gastric AdenocarcinomaIn 1994, the World Health Organzation categorized H. pylori as a Class-1 human carcinogen. Since by a cautious estimate more than half of world?s population is infected with this bacterium, it comes as a surprise that less than 1% of the infected individuals eventually develop gastric adenocarcinoma. Surely, the relationship between H. pylori and cancer is not straightforward; as always, when it is embarrassing to admit our ignorance, the official verdict is that ?environmental and genetic factors? must play a role.
