Genetic Susceptibility for Smoking Behavior

It seems we cannot get off the topic; everybody agrees that smoking is hazardous (at least to a majority, although to a different degree), but the latest trend is to blame genetic trends, and thus pardons smokers from all responsibility ? a sort of ?carte blanche.? Interindividual variations in carcinogen metabolism and DNA repair are a fact of life, and the ?potential exposure reduction products? (PERPs) may play a role in risk reduction ? in any tumor. Differences in gender, age, ethnicity and general lifestyle are difficult to quantitate and even more difficult to exploit for the benefit of the individual. The interest in predictors of tobacco addiction and smoking behavior is therefore increasing because of the real evidence for a genetic component.
