Bendamustine: Everything Old is New Again?

It is hard to accept the fact that Bendamustine, an evidently active antineoplastic compound, has been first synthesized in 1963 ? only to be referred to, late in 2002, as ?a promising agent?. Why it was forgotten during the last forty years is anybody?s guess. The structure was known from the beginning: it is a bifunctional alkylator, useful as such in the treatment of a range of cancers. No knowledge of contemporary molecular biology was or is required to understand its workings, and yet, it is still awaiting licensing in several European countries as Ribomustin.
