The Uneasy Relationship Between Cancer and Platelets

Those who seek a comfortable, clear-cut association between cancer and platelets are in for another disappointment. Although one of the most common abnormalities in the blood of cancer patients is an abnormal platelet count (too high or too low), the feature is non-specific, apparently useless for diagnosis and is still not getting the attention it evidently deserves. There is a telltale link between platelet numbers and coagulation that is not put to optimal use in treatment ? yet. The bibliography on this topic is astounding, often controversial and open to infinite interpretations. It might be useful to take a step back from the details and try to see the big picture.
