CW November 2002Issue Number 11 November 2002 ISSN 10593802 The Reproducibility of the Placebo EffectBased on the meta-analysis of some 800 published studies, placebos can relieve about 35% of disease symptoms. This finding does not mean a cure or even improvement of the disease itself. Innumerable individuals will be delighted by the perspective that imitations of specific (and sometimes most uncomfortable) treatments can be used without containing specific therapeutic constituents. On the other hand, a large group of patients may eventually become disenchanted, especially cancer patients. Precious time may be lost and irreversible advances of the disease will shorten life expectancy.
