Avoidable Risk Factors in Cancer

The global differences in the frequency of cancer are large and poorly understood. Environmental, lifestyle, and genetic factors contribute to the increasing number of malignant diseases, and there is little doubt that many important risk factors can be avoided or prevented. Nevertheless, mankind continues in its ways for the most part, and either ignores or even ridicules warnings based on sound scientific evidence. Several major cancer conferences (such as the 2002 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Orlando FL and the 93rd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer research, San Francisco, CA) devoted much time to evaluate risk factors and preventive measures.
