CW September 2002Issue Number 9 September 2002 ISSN 10593802 Mammary Stromal Cells and Breast CancerAfter having been largely ignored for a long time, stromal cells are now recognized as contributing to or protecting against breast cancer consisting of mammary epithelium. A normal mammary gland requires for its development and functioning regular communication between stromal and epithelial cells, predominantly through the extracellular matrix. Several factors necessary for this crosstalk are being identified.
