CW July 2002Issue Number 7 July 2002 ISSN 10593802 Exploiting the Role of p53 in CancerAfter over two decades and over 6000 papers describing p53 alterations in human tumors, practical strategies directed at correcting p53 mutations are still far from clinical use. In fact, the p53 protein was called the ?protein of the year? not long ago. As of now, 15,121 somatic and 196 germline mutations of p53 have been catalogued at the International Association of Cancer Registries (IARC) database, in an enormous global effort. There are probably more. And yet, there are no safe, effective and non-toxic therapeutic approaches based on all that knowledge.
