Tamoxifen Backed by Blue Ribbon Panel

Doctors should continue to use tamoxifen for women with early stage breast cancer even though aromatase inhibitors (AIs) show promise in preventing tumor recurrence, according to a blue ribbon panel of experts from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The panel was convened after the AI anastrozole (Arimidex) was reported to be slightly more effective than tamoxifen in preventing recurrence in postmenopausal women with early stage breast cancer. But there has not been a significant survival advantage demonstrated with the AI over tamoxifen, according to the panel?s report.
