CW June 2002Issue Number 6 June 2002 ISSN 10593802 Proper Diagnosis of Melanoma in SituEarly and accurate diagnosis of malignant melanoma is essential in order to ensure proper treatment. Melanoma in situ that is confined at the site of origin is potentially curable by surgery if diagnosed correctly. Standard histological technique seems to misdiagnose certain invasive melanoma as melanoma in situ leading to inadeqate treatment and eventual death. Immunohistochemical technique that identifies specific a protein marker on melanocyte can distinguish the invasive cancer cells not detected by the histologic staining.
