The Significance of c-erbB-2 in Colorectal Cancer

Overexpression of the c-erbB-2 protein (also: HER-2/neu), originally associated with some forms of breast cancer, has been determined in a variety of solid tumors, including colorectal cancer. Customarily called HER-2, the oncogene is both a diagnostic tool and a target for novel therapeutic strategies. It can be identified and quantitated in the patient?s serum and in tumor samples. The results have been correlated with the clinical course of the malignancy. Preliminary results indicate that HER-2 levels parallel tumor progression.
