CW May 2002Issue Number 5 May 2002 ISSN 10593802 Oral Fluoropyrimidines, Novel Agents for the Treatment of Colorectal CancerFor over four decades, the traditional therapy for many solid tumors and their metastases has been 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), as single agent or in combinations. 5-FU is known to have severe limitations, does not improve survival rates significantly and causes serious side effects. It comes as a surprise that new, effective and less toxic agents have become available only in the last five years. Although it is to be expected that 5-FU will continue to play a role in cancer chemotherapy, new agents with greater tumor selectivity and therefore lesser toxicity are on trial and promising.
