CW May 2002Issue Number 5 May 2002 ISSN 10593802 New Aspects of the Antitumor Effect of COX-2 Inhibitors in Colorectal CancerNon-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, mostly inhibitors of cyclooxygenases (COX), have and are still being hailed as protective and even curative in colorectal and perhaps even other cancers. The reasoning seems sound: COXs are involved both in tumor growth and angiogenesis; they inhibit the normal conversion of arachidonic acid to bioactive prostanoids. Now it appears that some of the conversion products are indeed tumorigenic, but others are not, which allows us to focus on supporting those metabolites that may contribute to tumor growth control.
