Molecular Marker for Ulcerative Colitis Indicate DNA Damage

DNA damage at strategic sites, if not repaired, can lead to cancer. The sequence, dysplasia to carcinoma, is well documented. In the case of colon cancer, the sequence of dysplasia to cancer may be long in duration. Therefore, a molecular marker to identify DNA damage can prevent development of this disease by making proper intervention possible. It has been suggested that accelerated turnover of cells may introduce mutation in DNA, and in time an accumulation of such mutation can lead to cancer.
