CW May 2002Issue Number 5 May 2002 ISSN 10593802 Budding and Risk of Lymph Node Metastasis in Early Colorectal CancerStage I colorectal cancer can be curatively resected. Though the risk of lymph node invasion in well-differentiated stage I or II adenocarcinoma is very low, cancer cells can invade the lymphatic vessels and blood vessels at these stages, which can lead to lymph node metastasis in time. Simple markers that predict invasions to lymphatic vessels can be used to determine the nodal status of colorectal cancer patients. Budding, also a prognostic factor for this disease, is found to be associated with lymphovascular invasion and lymph node metastasis.
