False hopes are raised, disappointment usually follows. The new agents publicized are either not available yet, are experimental, untried or eventually ineffective. This explains in part the growing trend of cancer patients to look for and try alternative medicines. Since this trend is a veritable cash cow, the number of preparations on the market is also growing, ranging from herbal preparations to dietary supplements to chemicals.
