Salt Depletion: A Complication of Colonoscopy

Low serum sodium concentration is noticed in certain individuals undergoing screening colonoscopy. Nausea, pain, and abdominal manipulation that are integral part of colonoscopy procedure may stimulate secretion of arginine vasopressin, a pituitary hormone that plays part in water retention. Physicians should be aware of such complication, because this may contribute to psychological or neurological problem after colonoscopy.
