Problems and Solutions in Drug Development

The need for novel and better cancer treatment is obvious; although mortality at least for some cancers has started to decline in the last five years, this apparent success can not be attributed solely to improvements in therapy. Better detection techniques allow for earlier diagnosis and (for poorly understood reasons), the incidence, characteristics and ?natural history? of some cancers is changing. Chemotherapy is becoming a refined, increasingly specific and targeted tool, but development of new drugs is becoming increasingly demanding, in expenditures and manpower.
