The following topics were discussed at the 59th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology in Washington D.C.:
Successful Topical Treatment of Actinic Keratosis with Imiquimod 5%
Imiquimod, the first commercially available IRM [Immune Response Modifier] provided effective clearance of Actinic Keratosis lesions in a recent pilot study. Actinic Keratosiss lesions are thought to be precancerous.
Topical Cream for the Treatment of Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma
The immune response modifying drug, imiquimod, showed impressive results in the treatment of primary superficial basal cell carcinoma, according to recent pilot studies.
Genital Herpes: Heading Toward a Cure
A new investigational drug for the treatment of genital herpes, resiquimod, showed dramatic results in a pilot study.
Allogeneic Tumor Vaccine for Stage IIA Melanoma
Melanoma is presently the fastest growing malignancy in the US. Following surgical excision of their primary tumor, patients with stage IIA melanoma have historically followed a strategy of ?watchful waiting.? In the past few years, several groups of investigators have been testing the potential of therapeutic vaccines in patients with various stages of melanoma. At the Fifth World Conference on Melanoma held in Venice on February 28-March 3, the results of the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) Study 9035 were released.
