In early-stage rectal cancer, successful resection with a tumor-free margin, can improve cure rate. However, in some patients the resection margin could be very close. Preoperative accurate determination of resection margin by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can identify these high-risk patients and they could benefit from preoperative radiotherapy, more extensive surgery, or both.
