CW May 2001Issue Number 5 May 2001 ISSN 10593802 Tumor EvolutionThe microenvironment of a tumor creates a selective pressure that drives the evolution of the cancer cells and the progression of tumorigenesis. Elegant experiments using colorectal cancer cell lines have demonstrated the relationship between different classes of carcinogen and distinct types of genetic instability. These findings provide insights into the role of dietary and environmental factors in determining cancer progression and provide clues about the choice of therapeutic drugs to treat different types of tumor.
