CW May 2001Issue Number 5 May 2001 ISSN 10593802 Molecular Marker for Early Detection of Breast Cancer in Ductal FluidMolecular abnormality develops in a cell long before cancerous cells are identified from morphological changes. If abnormality is detected at this stage, preventive measure could halt the progression of the disease. It has been observed that excess methylation of a critical site on a tumor suppressor gene or other essential genes can prevent its expression of cancer. A very sensitive and specific test has been developed that can assess the degree of methylation in a small number of cells obtained from breast duct fluids.
