The Management of Breakthrough Cancer Pain

In patients with moderate to severe cancer pain, two components are generally present: persistent cancer pain (which lasts 12 or more hours per day) and breakthrough cancer pain, a transient exacerbation of pain of moderate to severe intensity that occurs on top of a background of otherwise controlled persistent pain.
