The Treatment of Acute Leukemia: An Update

The balance between toxicity and efficacy of traditional cytotoxic therapy is becoming increasingly unacceptable in most malignant diseases. Leukemia is no exception and undergoes periods of high hope and deep resignation. Many recent chemotherapeutic agents started out as very promising, only to be overcome by the relentless appearance of drug resistance; once patients fail to respond and start relapsing, a fatal outcome is almost inevitable. In the following, novel agents undergoing trials for the treatment of various myelodyscrasias will be briefly reviewed.
