Cancer Genetics in 2002

The hectic completion of the human genome has been hailed, with much fanfare, as the solution to all problems of mankind ? from predicting future concert pianists to candidates for colon cancer. Cataloguing innumerable amino acid sequences was truly a major technical achievement, but as yet reveals almost nothing why and how we function in health and disease. We expected now to see the ?whole picture?, but in fact the details of the complex mosaic from which life is composed continue to evade us. Promises to revolutionize the practice of oncology are still unfulfilled.
