CW December 2001Issue Number 12 December 2001 ISSN 10593802 Low-Tar Cigarettes are not HarmlessThe levels of tar and nicotine listed on pack of cigarettes are not actually the levels smokers inhale. These numbers are obtained from an inanimate machine ?smoker.? The addicted human smokers compensate their nicotine need in many ways. Therefore, in spite of the use of low-tar cigarettes, the risk of smoking-related cancer risk has not been reduced as expected. There is no evidence that switching to light or ultra-light cigarettes actually assists smokers in quitting.
