CW December 2001Issue Number 12 December 2001 ISSN 10593802 Cholesterol Lowering Drugs and Cancer ChemotherapyStatins, for example, pravastatin, simvastatin, lovastatin and atoravastatin (lipitorTM) have earned their place in the sun as potent and reliable lipid-lowering drugs and are being widely prescribed to prevent potential heart disease. They are generally well tolerated, but are not always without risk. With widespread use, unexpected pharmacokinetic interactions with other drugs have come to light; hepatotoxicity and acute muscle toxicity are among the unwanted consequences. Another is the inhibition of P-glycoprotein transport function, which complicates sumultaneous administration of statins and chemotherapy to cancer patients.
