Butyrates: A Rediscovered Magic Bullet?

Antineoplastic effects of butyrates have been known for over two decades, but their rapid metabolization has discouraged their use in cancer chemotherapy in the past. Greater insight into the mechanisms of action of various butyrate derivatives has rekindled interest in their therapeutic use; strong maturative action by enhanced gene transcription together with good tolerance make them attractive as antitumor agents.
