Chemicals from Acacia Tree Fights Cancer

Avicins, a family of carbohydrate-containing compounds widely present in plants, have been isolated from an Australian desert tree Acacia victoriae and are found to be very effective in preventing skin cancer in animal model. These compounds prevent mutations of key DNA that can facilitate cancer. In addition, they have direct effect on the expression of specific genes that regulate production of inflammatory agents. By preventing chronic inflammation, avicins could be used as preventative agents against cancer.
