CW October 2001Issue Number 10 October 2001 ISSN 10593802 Chemicals from Acacia Tree Fights CancerAvicins, a family of carbohydrate-containing compounds widely present in plants, have been isolated from an Australian desert tree Acacia victoriae and are found to be very effective in preventing skin cancer in animal model. These compounds prevent mutations of key DNA that can facilitate cancer. In addition, they have direct effect on the expression of specific genes that regulate production of inflammatory agents. By preventing chronic inflammation, avicins could be used as preventative agents against cancer.
